A very rare caviar bowl #76,
Copenhagen 1915-19,
designed by Johan Rohde, exectued by Georg Jensen
Three-legged stand on a raised round base on flared cabriole legs with lion’s paws, which are connected to each other by tendrils and a central shell decoration, supporting the round frame. The body is decorated with a moulded profile, partially by a beaded ornament and finished with a widening rim. The dome-shaped lid is crowned by a tapered acanthus handle. Under the lid the original glass insert made of colourless glass, which is decorated with a cutted star to its bottom. The lower base area also decorated with an acanthus-shaped ornament, similar to the lid, which bears a striking resemblance to the main decorative element of the ‘Acorn’ decoration of the same named pattern. The area around the glass insert is hollow and is used to hold crushed ice.
Exceptionally rare caviar bowl, also with original glass insert, from the early period of Johan Rohde’s collaboration with Georg Jensen. The design is documented for 1915, the hallmarks allow it to be dated to the period between 1915 and 1919. The condition is remarkably good, even the glass insert shows no chipping (not even very small ones) and there are no repairs to be noted.
13.6 cm / 5.35” tall, 8.9 cm / 3.5” diameter (to the lid); 372.6 g / 11.97 oz
