An Arts & Crafts “Cymric” sterling silver tray,
Birmingham 1903 by Liberty & Co. designed by Archibald Knox
Elongated, quadrangular basic form, the rim area protruding like a risalite in the middle of the narrow sides. The corners are each subdivided by bevelled turquoise cabochons, the smooth centre somewhat deepened. A masterfully crafted tray by one of England’s most important Arts & Crafts silver workshops.
The design originates from Archibald Knox, who, in the course of his collaboration with Liberty & Co. designed artworks of high elegance and exquisite quality, thus helping Liberty & Co. to international fame. Liberty & Co. edited the designs from Archibald Knox’s hand into two model series, with the works being produced in pewter, this series being called “TUDRIC”, and silver known as “CYMRIC”.
Several museums keep works by Liberty & Co., the most important of which are the Metropolitan Museum, New York, the Victoria & Albert Museum, London and the Bröhan Museum, Berlin.
