Carsten From Andersen – one of Denmark’s Most Distinguished Contemporary Silversmiths and Designers
Carsten From Andersen is a Danish goldsmith and silversmith based in Copenhagen. He received his master’s qualification as a silversmith in 1969 at the renowned silver workshop Brødrene Hjejle in Fredericia, Denmark. Following his studies in art history at the University of Copenhagen and his specialist training at the Institute for Precious Metals (“Institut for Ædelmetal”), he worked there from 1987 to 1989 as a lecturer. He was also associated with Davids Samling in Copenhagen, whose internationally acclaimed collection comprises Islamic art, European art of the 18th century, and early Danish modernism. Since 1989, he has run his own studio dedicated to jewellery and metal art. Carsten From Andersen is a member of the Danish Silversmiths’ Association, Galerie Metal, and the historic Copenhagen Goldsmiths’ Guild, founded in 1429.
His works have been exhibited internationally, including at the Danish Museum of Art & Design in Copenhagen, the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, the Victoria & Albert Museum in London, the Bröhan-Museum in Berlin, as well as at TEFAF in New York, Chicago, and Amsterdam.
Carsten From Andersen has received numerous awards, including first prize in the International Jewellery Design Competition in Budapest and the Karl Gustav Hansen Prize. His works are held in distinguished public and private collections, including the Victoria & Albert Museum in London, Koldinghus Museum, the Nationalmuseum in Sweden, and the collection of Her Majesty Queen Margrethe II.
At the centre of Carsten From Andersen’s artistic practice is his exploration of the silver surface as both a sculptural and poetic medium. His silver works – particularly his vases and bowls – are created through a highly refined process of hammer texturing and repoussé, in which the surface is transformed into rhythmic, relief-like structures. The resulting forms reveal a distinctive tactile quality, with impressions resembling carefully arranged stones in dry-stone masonry.
His modern silver vases and sculptural vessels occupy a deliberate space between functional silver objects and autonomous works of art. Characterised by expressive surfaces, exceptional craftsmanship, and a profound understanding of materiality, these contemporary silver artworks unite technical mastery with an almost archaic and elemental presence. Each piece reflects the dialogue between the hand of the maker, the physical properties of silver, and the timeless language of form.
Anni Nørskov Mørch, curator of the special exhibition “Different but Same” at Koldinghus, described his work as representing “some of the finest examples of Danish silver art.”
