The artist silversmith Nan Nan Liu
The creations of the young artist silversmith Nan Nan Liu are among the most outstanding examples of contemporary British silversmithing. Her almost incomprehensible skill in craftsmanship as well as her distinct feeling for forms results in artworks of highest elegance and beauty. One of her specialist areas in silversmithing, which has become her trademark, is the technique of layering: the overall appearance of the work is formed by soldering silver strips onto each other. The final refinement of the ribbed surface is achieved by manually re-cutting the solder strips with a graver. This technique was used in the realisation of the base. With regard to the wall of the beaker she also documented her masterful ability to engrave, which was also realised with the hand graver.
Her works can be found, among others, in the Victoria & Albert Museum, London and the Modern Silver Collection of the Goldsmith’s Company, London. Nan Nan Liu was already teaching during her training at the Bishopsland Educational Trust and graduated from the Royal College of Art in 2010. She is the recipient of numerous awards.
